A new picture of Canada's labour force is coming in to focus

February 15, 2017

The Job Talks national survey of skilled trades launched in January 2017. To date, nearly 500 surveys have been completed - this bring the research team and I to the halfway mark in our recruitment effort.

The team would like to extend our gratitude to the various sponsors, partners, and supporters who have helped Job Talks get this far.

Here are some of the recruitment numbers:

  • 484 surveys completed as of March 31

  • The majority of participants are under 44 years of age

  • We have received the strongest response from:

    • Automotive Service Technicians

    • Bakers

    • Carpenters

    • Cooks & Chefs

    • Electricians

    • Millwrights

    • Landscape Horticulturists

  • Regionally, we're hoping to see more representation from:

    • Québec

    • British Columbia

  • Here are some of the specialized trades we're working to have more representation from:

    • Automotive Painters

    • Bricklayers

    • Cabinetmakers

    • Concrete Finishers

    • Heavy Equipment & Crane Operators

    • Insulators

    • Lathers

    • Rig Technicians

    • Tilesetters

Our survey remains open to skilled women and men looking to contribute to our research. We continue to make new connections in industry and are open to partnerships from educational and regulatory groups. Together, we are compiling a comprehensive picture of Canada’s skilled labour force.

Currently, we can use the most help sharing a link to our online survey with men and women working in the skilled trades, especially in the areas identified above. If you would like to get involved, please email me using the "Contact" form at the bottom of our homepage.
